I'm not positive that this solved the problem, but someone on the list 
asked about this a couple of months ago, and Stephan gave the following 
suggesting.

here are two useful kernel boot options that can help:

"enable_timer_pin_1"

also, there is the opposite option:

"disable_timer_pin_1"

Both of these should help work around buggy APIC timers, especially on 
ATI chipsets.
