First questions.

Is the font strange when you are in pure text console mode (hit together 
Ctrl-Alt-F3 to get into a pure text console)?

Which Scientific Linux are you running?
   cat /etc/redhat-release

Which desktop are you using?
   KDE, Gnome, Ice ?
