One thing I forgot to mention - you can usually kill an xorg/xfree86
X-server with the Ctrl+Alt+Backspace keystroke.

Also, if you just type "X" at the command line, all you'll really see if
the mouse cursor.  Some of the older ones had a 50% gray checkmark
pattern, but the newer ones just give you a black screen with a mouse
cursor shaped like an X.  If you get this, it's a success!
