This is a re-send to 'scientific-linux-users' since the original, directly

Okay, but out of curiosity, where does the install program find the files
that it expects to find in the 'SL/pixmaps' subdirectory, which doesn't
exist?

Be that as it may, I'll assume the install program knows what it's doing.
But I don't. I tried installing using other options than the graphical
install, such as 'linux text', 'linux rescue' and 'linux noprobe', and
every time I am led down the identical path, leading to 'can't find CD
device driver'. So far I haven't found any way to get past that obstacle.

Does the output of lspci that I'd sent earlier help in giving suggestions
to what I should try next? Here's the earlier message:

Thanks for looking at this.

Help would be much appreciated; until someone suggests something useful for
me to try, I'm unable to install. Thanks.
