Hi Roy: Sorry that I didn't chime in earlier on this thread, but I had
the same
problem with a new laptop a couple of months ago. First, the new BIOS's
give
the kernel trouble with the new ACPI schemes. We had to go with
acpi=off as well
just to make things work, which of course, is not ideal, but works.
You'll lose
your advanced power features and have higher battery drain, but the
system should
work fine. You might even have to manually shut the system down after
Linux goes
through it's shutdown procedure.

Hopefully, down the road, the ACPI drivers in the Linux kernel will
catch up to the newer
bios schemes and we will be able to go back to normal.

I'm still thinking that there might be IRQ issues as well and that some
of the problems
might be worked around with another option without turning acpi
completely off, however
that particular machine is not in my hands anymore and I can't
experiment with it.

Good luck..

How doth the VAX's C-compiler
Improve its object code.
And even as we speak does it
Increase the system load.

How patiently it seems to run
And spit out error flags,
While users, with frustration, all
Tear all their clothes to rags.
