We had a similar looking problem yesterday when trying to install SL4.2
on a new desktop with an ASUS P5LD2-VM mainboard. We managed to get
around the issue by turning off Speedstep in the bios. That may not
be possible on your notebook though.

Hi Roy,
I see that you tried the noprobe option, which often get's by several
problems. For a complete list of options, they are listed at

https://www.scientificlinux.org/distributions/4x/installing/bootup.html

The one's most common, that arn't on the boot screens are
noapic, apic, apm=off, nofb

But it's possible that it's a bad CD. To test that, one thing to do is
to put it in another machine (preferably something with a different
motherboard) and see if you still get a kernel panic.
Usually with bad CD's, it doesn't even get past the 'loading...' stages,
but it does sometimes fail on a kernel panic.
The problem with CD's is that high priced name brands, can still have
really poor quality CD's.
