SL installation fails near start(?)

I am a Linux novice but very familiar with Win OS.

I tried to install SL 4.2 on a Gateway M675 notebook but failed (see
below). I was able to install Mandriva 2006, but would like to get SL
installed.

Computer specs

Processor:	Pentium™ 4 CPU, 3.2 GHz
Core logic:	Intel 865PE, ICH5	
Phoenix BIOS, SMBIOS 2.3 support 
RAM:			512 MB
Video:		ATI M11-P, 64 MB DDR-SDRAM

Installation fails during the initial system check after pressing
Enter (or 'Linux noprobe' and all other variants). The last few lines
are

and then it hangs.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
