to *, with sound problems:
check only 2 things:
1. that driver for your card is loaded
2. that there is no other program that locks the sound device.
You should all learn where are the logs, because search for errors in
linux should ALWAYS begin in analyzing log files.
system logs are in /var/log
user X-session logs are in ~/.xsession-errors
