Sound stops working under SL4.x

I recently upgraded my Dell Optiplex GX280 from SL3.0.4 to SL4.2.  Since
doing so sound no longer works, whereas it did under SL3.  If I open the
Volume Control app I get a dialog box reading "Sorry, no mixer elements
and/or devices found".  Any ideas?
