Also be aware that that updating the ypserv package will move a
modified /var/yp/Makefile to /var/yp/Makefile.rpmsave. This can
bite you if you are not paying attention.

The suggestions about the NIS min uid are probably spot on. There's also a
chance that the nscd is causing problems here. As we moved to sl42, I had
problems which seemed similar to yours. Rather than spending much time
debugging, I disabled nscd on my sl42 machines.
