Just to add my 2 cents here. I don't need repo preference. I resolved this
issue by disabling all but base repo's, then scripting the packages I want to
be notified on (and upgrade to) per repo, then croning updates based on the
"--enablerepo=" option in yum.

It's smooth, clean, and gives you granual control of every package on your
system (allowing yum to automagically do things for you takes away that
control). In my case, repo preference is not something I would wait for with
yum, as I wouldn't use it anyway.
