OK, I am not familiar with apt, however I had already upgraded to SL 4.2 via yum (and 
rebooted) previously. Thus it is an already upgraded system.

I hadn't encountered this type of behaviour when I upgraded to SL 4.1 from 4.0 (via yum 
again), and followed the upgrade procedure of apt.
