Until we got reliable central backups (via Legato Networker) I used
"rlbackup":

http://www.math.ualberta.ca/imaging/rlbackup/

This has a couple nice features: It retains multiple backup versions
while keeping hardlinks to unchanged files and it uses a geometrical
pruning method to balance disk space with versions. It is also useful
to NFS mount the backups back to the client so when they are needed
the admin doesn't need to get invloved since the backups are available
as normal files.
