this is usually auto-generated .. in not always smartest way ;-)

Yep. And there are few more:

Giving that apt for rpm is not developped anymore ..
since Mandrake took over Connectiva ...
(plus it does not understand multilib archs like ia64/x86_64
etc ..)

... it is not likely such things will be ever fixed.

We at CERN start thinking about migrating to yum for
next SLC version(s) (SLC 5 most likely)
