In our experience most freezes while machines are "idle" are caused by the 
screensavers tickling a bug in the GL/DRI layer.  You can easily test this 
by either:

   disabling the screensavers

   disabling dri in the X server config

Of course screensavers arn't the only things which use DRI and so *can* 
cause these issues, though they do seem to stress it more than most.  We 
have a few Matlab users who can triger similar problems on occasions too.

Of course the exact DRI problems depend on the video card hardware, and 
kernel modules implementing support (so it varies from release to 
release).
