Try googling for "linux ibm thinkpad t42". You'll get pages and pages of 
useful links to bits and pieces of information and software. Put it all 
together, and most of what you want will work. It's no easier than that, 
I'm afraid.

To get more out of your touchpad, look into the docs for the synpatics 
package coming with SL4. This one is simple, and you may find that there 
are even more convenient ways to scroll.

There's one feature of system-config-network-cmd I came across by chance:
You can feed it lines like

   'DeviceList.Wireless.eth1.Wireless.EssId=MY-ESSID'
   'DeviceList.Wireless.eth1.Wireless.Key=0x...'

on stdin. I think that's the most convenient way to switch between a 
number of configurations.
