Hi Fabian,

I tend to find that it's best to compile vtk from source. I know it's a
pain, but there are so many options when compiling vtk that it's almost
always the case that any pre-built packages don't quite provide what I'm
after. For instance I tend to want the Java, Tcl and Python wrappings,
the docs, the examples, the patented classes, and so on.

Although at first vtk does seem a bit daunting to compile from scratch,
it's a lot better than it used to be. I find the cvs version tends to
work a lot better than the releases (you can find that here:
http://www.vtk.org/get-software.php#cvs) and indeed I compiled vtk only
a couple of weeks ago on my SL4.1 box and it worked first time (it did
take about an hour though!)...
