I'm a new member of the SL community and am in the
process of installing SL 4.0 on a new hard disk. I've
hit a snag in the booting of the install process and I
think it's because I don't fully understand the
process.
To make a long story short: are the iso images of SL
4.0 bootable? If not, could someone describe, or
point me to, the process of building a CD set that
would boot and install SL 4.0?
My 4 iso images were downloaded from:
ftp://ftp.scientificlinux.org/linux/scientific/40/iso/i386
Each .iso file md5sum matched it's MD5 sum value from
the list also found at the folder above.
The CD burn process was done from the discussion found
at:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/answers.php?action=viewarticle&artid=243
My CD burn environment is virtually identical to the
author's and my burn appeared to work fine - no error
conditions of any kind were noted.
I've come across an alternative location containing a
'boot.iso'.
ftp://ftp.scientificlinux.org/linux/scientific/40/i386/images/SL/README
The README found there has the comment:
"The boot.iso file is an ISO 9660 image of a bootable
CD-ROM. It is useful
in cases where the CD-ROM installation method is not
desired ..."
I'm looking to perform a CD-based install so this
comment gave me pause in proceeding with boot.iso.
Rather than burning more CD's in the hope that I m
getting close can someone give a brief list of
instructions on what to burn, where, and how?
Thanks in advance,
r.m.
p.s. please feel free to respond to me directly
