The first thing that yum does is download the headers of each of the 
rpms in the repository.  These will have names that look like rpms as they 
represent rpms, but they end in .hdr .  After the headers are downloaded 
yum will do what you requested.

To see what updates are available

  yum list updates

A

  yum list installed

shows what rpms are installed.
