Dear Debbie:

Thanks for the tip. A good try. I went into Gnome and the gnome-volume-control 
and UNmuted all the relevant outputs you mentioned. Never saw so many 
options. I thought perhaps that was Gnome's revenge for my choosing KDE. But 
still no sound out of my CD. I then went back to KDE and tried to do the same 
in Kmix. Still no sound. Will have to keep trying.
