Renamed from serialconsole so as to use the new naming convention.
This script makes all the changes necessary to send
console output to both the serial port and the screen. This
also creates a login prompt on the serial port and allows users
to login at this prompt.
Bug with the default serial number and dealing with a /boot
partition were fixed in version 3.1.

By default startkde checks to make sure that a users home area has
at least 25K of disk space. A bug in the openafs kernel module for
the enterprise kernel causes single cpu machines to only list 1 K of
space. This changes the check to only need 1 K of space. The check
to make sure kde can actually write to the users home area is still
intact.

For the RedHat kernel 2.4.21-9.EL and above, many people feel that
the kernel isn't very responsive on desktops. This tweek changes
the pagecache settings. This has been shown to make the kernel
seem much more responsive in a desktop enviroment. Values
changed to "1 5 10" for /proc/sys/vm/pagecache .
This parameter has three values :
Minimum percent of memory used for page cache. Default is 1%.
The initial amount of memory for cache. Default is 15%.
Maximum percent of memory used for page cache. Default is 100%

Nedit was found to have a bug preventing it from opening files.
Rebuilding from source did not clear up the problem. It also
showed a comment that STRONGLY suggested just getting the binaries
from nedit.org. We followed this advice, and we packaged the

There are some rules to follow to be able to contribute to this area. These

1- Contract Troy Dawson <[log in to unmask]> with the rpm's that you wish to
contribute. If Troy doesn't personally know you, be prepared with some some
way to show him that you can be trusted. He is a nice guy but
he also is very concerned that this contrib section doesn't get abused.
2- The contributed rpm's must be able to go into a standard Scientific
Linux 3.0.x release without any extra outside rpms. If extra rpm's are
required, they must be supplied. All extra rpm's supplied must meet the
same criteria as the main rpm's.
3- For each rpm, the source rpm (src.rpm) must be provided.
4- For each source rpm, you must provide where you got it.
5- Both rpm's and srpm's must be digitally signed.
6- Rpms must be freely distributable.
We understand this sounds like alot of work, but once you do it once, it
becomes much easier.

ATI 9600/9700/9800 Video card
The version of X included here does NOT support these video cards very
well. If you have one of these cards then you should do a text install
and at the "X" screen select "vesa". This should be enough to get
installed. You can either stay with the "vesa" driver or download and
install the "X" driver from www.ati.com . See

Ethernet devices based on
"Marvell Technology Group Ltd. Yakou Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000Base-T
Adapter" do not work out of the box. A driver is available from

Cisco Aironet 350 wireless ethernet card
If you install Windows patch xxx in addition to upgrading the windows
driver it also upgrades the firmware in the Cisco 350 wireless card.
Info from Cisco follows. The "good" firmware is 4.25.30 or 1.6.7 or 1.5 .
If it is 5.20.17 then it is the BAD firmware. I got these firmware
versions from the Cisco website.
"Recommended repair is a firmware down-grade of the Cisco Aironet 350
PCMCIA network interface card as Cisco has not released a updated Linux
for the upgraded firmware as of yet."
3com 905 ethernet (Not the A or B or C version)
Seems like orginal 905 does not work but 905a does.
Make sure Plug-n-Play if OFF in your bios. This has
made some 905's work.
Also seems like there is a kernel bug tickled by kudzu. So
to get this card to work you will need to turn kudzu off.
chkconfig --level 35 kudzu off

SOFTWARE ISSUES/BUGS

XFree86 and ATI
After the successful install (again using the graphical X-windows
install) and after what appears
to be a successful boot up, I get a blank screen and just sits there.
Both the Radeon and Nvidia driver in this XFree86 4.3.0 release does
not detect that you are using the digital port of flat panel monitors.
The easy thing to do is plug into the analog port until you can get
past the install.
sgi_fam with tcpwrappers(/etc/hosts.deny)
Error messages /var/log/secure such as

Only solution so far is to change /etc/hosts.allow to allow sgi_fam

This could be a security risk so you must decide.
redhat-config-packages
This rpm only installs packages via cdrom. It is not useful.
It does NOT work so do NOT try to use it. Use yum instead.
It is useful. It is only included here because rpms have dependencies
on it and I do not want to change those to remove the dependencies.
/usr/X11R6/lib
The "final link" to each of the libraries is missing.
Should be
libX11.so.6.2 <- libX11.so.6 <- libX11.so
But is
libX11.so.6.2 <- libX11.so.6
Solution is to install Xfree86-devel. This rpm will make the
missing links.

Changes to the Scientific Linux Installation Program (Anaconda)
The following section includes information specific to the
Scientific Linux installation program, Anaconda.
Note
In order to upgrade an already-installed Scientific Linux 3 system
to Update 5, you must use "yum" to update those packages that
have changed. The use of Anaconda to upgrade to Update 5 is not supported.
Use Anaconda only to perform a fresh install of Scientific Linux 3
Update 5.
o If you are copying the contents of the Scientific Linux 3
Update 5 CD-ROMs (in preparation for a network-based installation, for
example) be sure you copy the CD-ROMs for the operating system only.
General Information
This section contains general information not specific to any other
section of this document.
o Scientific Linux 3 Update 5 now includes the diskdump
facility, which can serve as an alternative to (or be used in
conjunction with) the Netdump facility.
The diskdump facility for i386 systems currently support the aic7xxx,
aic79xx, mpt fusion, dpt_i2o, megaraid2, sym53c8xx, sata_promise and
ata_piix devices. On ia64 systems, the aic7xxx, aic79xx, mpt fusion,
megaraid2, sym53c8xx, and sata_promise devices are supported. On AMD64
and Intel(R) EM64T systems, the aic7xxx, aic79xx, mpt fusion,
megaraid2, sym53c8xx, sata_promise, and ata_piix devices are
supported.
Note
The sym53c8xx and sata_promise and ata_piix modules are newly
supported in Scientific Linux 3 Update 5.
Usage of the diskdump facility requires a dedicated disk device or
disk partitions that are large enough to contain all physical system
memory. In the event of a system crash, memory will be written to the
configured disk location. Upon subsequent reboot, the data will be
copied from the disk and formatted into a vmcore file, identical in
functionality to that created by the netdump facility, and stored in
the unique subdirectory /var/crash/. The vmcore file may be analyzed
using the crash(8) utility.
The kernel modules required for the diskdump facility are
automatically included in the Scientific Linux 3 kernel. The
associated user-space diskdump package is named diskdumputils-1.0.1-4,
and like netdump, is installed by default.
The available and appropriate disk location must first be configured
and then preformatted for use. After formatting, the diskdump facility
may be turned on with chkconfig(8), and then the service must be
started. Detailed documentation concerning configuration and user
tasks is included with the diskdumputils at the following:

Kernel-Related Information
This section contains information related to the Scientific Linux
3 Update 5 kernel.
o Scientific Linux 3 Update 5 now extends Netdump platform
support from i386 to include AMD64, Intel(R) EM64T, Itanium, and
IBM(R) POWER architectures.
Documentation concerning configuration of a netdump client can be
found in the following document:

Documentation concerning configuration of a netdump server can be

The vmcore file may be analyzed using the crash(8) utility.
For more information on using Netdump, refer to the netdump(8) and
netdump-server(8) man pages.
Changes to Drivers and Hardware Support
This update includes bug fixes for a number of drivers. The more
significant driver updates are listed below. In some cases, the original
driver has been preserved under a different name, and is available as a
non-default alternative for organizations that wish to migrate their
driver configuration to the latest versions at a later time.
Note
The migration to the latest drivers should be completed before the next
Scientific Linux update is applied, because in most cases only one
older-revision driver will be preserved for each update.
These release notes also indicate which older-revision drivers have been
removed from this kernel update. These drivers have the base driver name
with the revision digits appended; for example, megaraid_2002.o. You must
remove these drivers from /etc/modules.conf before installing this kernel
update.
Keep in mind that the only definitive way to determine what drivers are
being used is to review the contents of /etc/modules.conf. Use of the
lsmod command is not a substitute for examining this file.
Intel(R) Pro/100 Adapter family (e100 driver)
o This driver is updated to version 3.3.6-k2.
o As part of the update of the e100 driver, the module options for e100
are no longer used. The e100 module options continue to exist in Red
Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 5 for compatibility with previous Red
Hat Enterprise Linux 3 releases, but they no longer have any effect on
the behavior of the new e100 driver. Customers who wish to configure
the behavior of the e100 driver should use the ETHTOOL_OPTS setting
available in the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth* files.
Intel(R) PRO/1000 Adapters (e1000 driver)
o This driver has been updated to version 5.6.10.1-k2.
Broadcom Tigon3 (tg3 driver)
o This driver has been updated to version 3.22RH.
Broadcom 4400 (b44 driver)
o This driver has been updated to version 0.95.
3ware 9000 Storage Controller (3w-9xxx driver)
o This driver has been updated to version 2.24.00.011fw.
3ware Storage Controller (3w-xxxx driver)
o This driver has been updated to version 1.02.00.037. The 1.02.00.033
driver is preserved.
QLogic Fibre Channel (qla2xxx driver)
o A module parameter has been added to the qla2200 driver to allow the
Reduced Interrupt Operation (RIO) to be turned off. RIO is a firmware
feature that attempts to increase efficiency by delaying interrupts.
RIO provides benefit when there is a heavy load with several commands
outstanding. However, it can reduce performance in other workloads (it
has been especially evident with tape I/O).
Note that the module parameter does not apply to the qla2100 or
qla2300 drivers.
Compaq SA53xx Controllers (cciss driver)
o This driver has been updated to version v2.4.54.RH1.
IBM ServeRAID (ips driver)
o The vary_io feature that was enabled for this driver in Red Hat
Enterprise Linux 3 Update 3 was found to cause adapter hangs in some
situations. This feature has been disabled again in the ips driver.
Some applications (primarily those that use raw I/O) may experience
reduced performance.
