Hi Alex,
Did you do an 'make mrproper'?  You usually just have to do it the first time
you make a particular kernel, but you get strange results if you don't.  So
the steps would be

   cd /usr/src/linux-2.4
   make mrproper
   copy your config file in from wherever
   edit your config file
   make oldconfig
   make dep
   make bzImage
   make modules
   make modules_install
