This uses the Silicon Image SiI 3114 controller. We have a 2x opteron
box here with the Tyan S2882 mobo that also has this controller. It
has 2 SATA drives and they work under 32 bit Debian (sarge), Linux
2.4.26-4. - so there exists a software solution. It is using the
sata_sil and libata modules.

I'm no SL expert, but maybe there is a way to tell the installation
program to explicitly use these modules? If not, using an ATA system
disk is probably the next simplest way to go.
