Greetings. I think we've straightened out the kinks in our PXE
installation for SL 3.0.1. Flushed with success, I figured we might as
well move on to SL 3.0.2. We immediately ran into trouble: I couldn't
find any kernel or RAM disk for pxeboot in the 3.0.2 tree.
In the tree for SL 3.0.1 we had:
-----
[root@ucd-host pxeboot]# pwd
/SL/3.0.1/images/pxeboot
[root@ucd-host pxeboot]# ls
README initrd.img vmlinuz
[root@ucd-host pxeboot]# cat README
The files in this directory are useful for booting a machine via PXE.
The following files are available:
vmlinuz - the BOOT kernel used for the installer
initrd.img - an initrd with support for all install methods and
drivers supported for installation of Red Hat Linux
-----
On the other hand, here's the situation for 3.0.2:
-----
[root@ucd-host 3.0.2]# pwd
/SL/3.0.2
[root@ucd-host 3.0.2]# find . -name '*[pP][xX][eE]*' -ls
33813 92 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 86079 Jun 2 20:00
./SL/RPMS/pxe-0.1-36.i386.rpm
-----
To construct the /SL/3.0.2 tree I downloaded the four 3.0.2 ISO files from:
ftp://ftp.scientificlinux.org/linux/scientific/302/iso/i386/
I then mounted each one in turn as a "loop" device:
mount -o loop SL.302.062904.i386.disc1.iso /mnt/disk
and then just "tarred" the contents to the /SL/3.0.2/ directory:
cd /mnt/disk
tar xvf - . | (cd /SL/3.0.2; tar xvfp -)
I then umounted /mnt/disk, mounted the second ISO, etc. (lather, rinse,
repeat). I don't see how this could have missed any files, but if I'm
overlooking the obvious, please let me know.
I tried to fool the installer by using the PXE kernel and RAM disk from
the 3.0.1 distribution. I got only a very short way into the
installation before I got the error message:
The Scientific Linux installation
tree in that directory does not
seem to match your boot media.
Stupid install trick No. 2: I tried using the kernel and RAM disk from
the .../3.0.2/isolinux directory for the PXE boot. That gave a series
of obscure (to me) anaconda errors, which I won't bother to duplicate here.
What am I missing? Thanks.
- Mike
