High Energy Physics Linux (HEPL) Preview April 12, 2004

This is a summary of what changed. See the full release notes for full
details. We really want to release this soon. Now is the time for suggestions.

---------------------------------------------------------------------- RPM
changes/adds
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

IceWM Updated to latest version, and put it in the graphical login's session list.

Yum

yum-conf changed to fix excludes to include new kernels Now points to
linux21.fnal.gov It also has the ability to use the files from the "comps.rpm"
to seed the headers instead of downloading them. So I have modified the
/HEPL/base/scripts/cp.comps.xml.sh script to build comps.rpm

zz_kernel_clean-1.0-1.i386.rpm

For the kernel 2.4.21-9.EL, and it's derivitives, there is a bug that is fixed
by setting /proc/sys/vm/inactive_clean_percent to 30. See
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=115438 This rpm set's
that parameter using sysctl.

Documentation

Some of these were in /doc . Moved to release itself.

apt-get

we are now aptable. Yum is installed by default, at the moment. apt is
available as a installer choice. Can the apt experts on this list try this
out. If it ok I will also install it by default. Only yum will do the daily
errata check though.
