Hi

First post, and very much in need of help having been working away on this
problem for 4 days! :(

On the desktop PC in question, I was running SL 6.2 (2.6.32-279 x64). I
believe that an automatic update (thought to have been disabled) took Xorg
to v13.1.

At this point, the proprietary graphics driver conflicted with Xorg
(undefined symbol - noXFree86DRIExtension) and the system would only boot
through a text splash screen before hanging at this primary console.
However, system was available for remote access, or via the virtual
consoles.

The graphics adapter in question is an ATI Firepro 2270.

I spent some time trawling around and came to the conclusion that the ATI
driver and Xorg 13.1 were incompatible. Hopefully, a correct first
conclusion?

At this point, the proprietary drivers were uninstalled.

I then issued "Xorg -configure" and received an xorg.conf file which
seemed to be well populated with some default drivers (radeon, vesa, ati).
However, I wasn't entirely convinced that this was an optimum solution.
Also, I had know lost OpenGL in /usr/lib (32-bit seems to be needed by
local user for some applications) - must have been due to the proprietary
driver.

I saw suggestions that fglrx (driver and kmod) from elrepo might provide a
more robust solution. In order to install release 13.1 of these packages,
I upgraded the system to SL 6.3 (baseline distribution, plus latest
updates):

I used "rpm -i" to install the elrepo "fglrx" packages, and rebooted.
However, graphics problems renewed, although error is different:

---
Screens found but none have a usable configuration
Fatal Server Error: No screen Found
---

I am assuming that the new driver and module are being picked-up (well,
something changed!). They appear to be loaded, and then rapidly unloaded
as documented within the xorg log file.

I can boot to a graphics context by removing these packages, as noted as
interim solution above.

So, I guess by way of summary:

- Am I right to seek to use the elrepo packages over the "default"
packages (drivers, modules) which I appear to be picking up?

- If the elrepo variants are best, should I expect them to work out of the
box or is there something else that I need to do following "rpm -i"?

- If I can / should stick with the defaults, could someone just help me
locate and install a 32-bit OpenGL?

I've tried to keep this brief as an opening submission, but can provide
more information. I would stress that my Unix background is mostly Solaris
and AIX - at this level of Linux, I am currently out of my depth (ie: I
have not been 100% confident in the steps taken above).

Any help greatly appreciated, "Thank You!" in advance :)
