There are several open "gnome-terminal does not repaint the screen
correctly"-bugs on bugzilla.redhat.com. Perhaps you could see whether
one of them fits your description, and add some info there. I don't
think this is a bug that will get fixed in ScientificLinux directly, but
instead is waiting for TheUpstreamVendor to release a fix eventually..
and anything we can do to help them to reproduce/isolate this will make
that happen more quickly.

FYI, we see screen corruption happening with aspell.. and we get an
error message such as

> ** (gnome-terminal:29923): WARNING **: No handler for control sequence `scroll-up' defined.

consistently to go with the corruption. Perhaps you have something similar?
