It really should "just work" out of the box.  Usually cable connections usually 
use DHCP (Dynamic Connections), and that is what the default network settings are.

Another answer was to read RedHat's documentation.  Also good advice.  This is 
because Scientific Linux is just RedHat Enterprise Linux recompiled.
