Hi Stack,
I adobe http://xrdp.org/ for remote GUI administration.
Unlike, VNC, you get your own session (true multiuser).
For a local GUI I love Xfce. Very minimal. Just a
GUI, not a playground.
I too have found X11 over SSH to be a royal pain
in the neck!
