    At least on my SL3 computer there's a file /etc/X11/XF86Config,
which in its "Screen" section has lines

        SubSection "Display"
                Depth     24
                Modes   "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        EndSubSection

I had added the "1280x1024" to the Modes line in order to increase the
resolution from the former "1024x768" maximum. You should be able
to do something similar. Maybe redhat-config-xfree86 can help
you do it without your editing XF86Config, but I haven't tried
using it.
