Just as a comment from the sidelines: a tip that we got from an IBM-er
was to add the line e.g

*.info;mail.none;authpriv.none;cron.none /dev/tty12

duplicating whatever recipe was logging to /var/log/messages.

When things seem to be going amiss, Alt/Ctrl/F12 will then show the
most-recent log messages, which can often throw some light on the
situation, even when things are so stuck that no other response can
be got.

Seemed a tip that's well worth passing on, I thought.
