What hardware is this? 9746 officially dropped some models, but still
mostly works on them, "GeForce4 and older GPUs are supported through
the 1.0-96xx and 1.0-71xx NVIDIA legacy graphics drivers."

If this is not it, make sure you have nvidia-graphics installed and
use

nvidia-graphics-switch 9746

Also please check the output of

modinfo nvidia-1_0-9746 | grep ^ver
