It certainly supports SATA-RAID.  I've got two arrays running under SL4.3

07:01.0 RAID bus controller: 3ware Inc 9xxx-series SATA-RAID
02:03.0 RAID bus controller: 3ware Inc 9xxx-series SATA-RAID

These are of course pci cards and they use 3w_9xxx.ko and worked out
of the box once configured on the card.  Whether you can use an onboard
sata-raid... I guess that would depend on the chip set.  absent that 
info, the
best way to find out would be...

PS. I've got a couple of MB where the onboard SATA controller (let alone
any RAID attempts) didn't work out of the box and required special module
builds.  I would guess that on newer hardware, unless you specifically 
built
the machine making sure that stock kernels would recognize your hardware,
it's kind of a crap shoot with the onboard controllers.
