We are using star (1.5.11 is in the SL6 repo) for years with our LTO3
and LTO5 changers.

And yes, mt and mtx are still used for changing tapes and initializing
the tape drive.
For doing backups with 6.X I recommend a recent kernel (they needed "a
few months" to incorporate a small kernel fix into mainstream - please
see https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=716593 )
