The first thing I would try is Scientific Linux 5.1 and not 5.0.  It has newer 
drivers.
This isn't a CPU problem, it's a SATA driver problem.  There is not one SATA 
driver, like there was one IDE driver.  They keep making new SATA controller 
chips, and as a result, you constantly need newer SATA drivers.
