The RHEL6 minimum is 512MB and the recommended is 1GB. I've just built
an SL6 VirtualBox VM on my laptop with just one ~8GB partition, no
swap partition, and 768MB of RAM without a hitch.

Could the type of install make a difference? Mine was a kickstart @Base install.
