Troy...

I installed the rpm that does the scripts for you. The scripts are enabled.

I corresponded with the keeper of tpconfig, and he had me go through some
troubleshooting. I went to single user mode and ran the program. It identified
my Alps pad and said it disabled it. When I startx, it is no longer disabled.
He seems to think that there is something in the way that X is started that
restarts the tap.

I got the binary from the http://compass.com/synaptics/ page.

The laptop is a Dell Latitude 840.

Regards... Tom
