It works for me as well.  Check to see if you have different locale
environment settings in the GUI shell vs. virtual terminal shell.  LC_* or
LOCALE.

I've never used it either.  Closest thing I can think of based on my
next-to-zero knowledge is konqueror.  It's a graphical browser which also
manages filesystems, and is installed with KDE.  I'm sure Gnome has its own
as well.  And for some reason, Nautilus is popping into my head.  But that
could just be the voices I try to ignore.
