  perhaps i'm just confused, but i took a peek at my /etc/crontab file
on a fairly fresh install of SL6 and was surprised that it had
absolutely no entries that i normally expect to see there --
references to "run-parts" kicking off cron.hourly, cron.daily and so
on.

  isn't that the file that should have those activities registered?
