Thanks, Stephan.  Yes, I didn't really mean to let the matter drop at 
that point.  I was just broadcasting my aha! experience (made possible 
by Jon).

It DOES seem strange that all of these machinations would be required to 
use a simple backup package and/or that the machinations wouldn't be 
handled by the installer.
