I wanted to be able to not install GRUB at all, as I already had one (in a different partition) and I wanted to modify its menu. Of course this would raise problems with kernel updates, when I'd have to manually fix "the other menu.lst", but the idea is that the installer really requires to install GRUB somewhere, when it shouldn't IMHO.

You are right, there is a bug in livecd-install-gui: you are ask on
which disk you would like to install grub into the MBR. You can choose
"NONE: Do not install GRUB (not recommended)" - but this does not work.
I will fix this in the next LiveCD build.

In the command line mode it is working (command: livecd-install) use the
option -nogrub (by the way, see livecd-install -h for more options).

As you said, skip grub install to MBR is not recommended, because in
this case you can not boot into SL5 after the installation. And you have
to know, how to install grub to the MBR, or how to use an already
install boot manager. If you use an already installed grub, you have to
know, how the entry has to look like in your "active" grub.conf. And if
you update the kernel, you have to take care of the entry in your
grub.conf. Because your grub.conf is maybe not accessible in SL5.
