Hi John,
I do appreciate all the detail, and hopefully I have the right answer, but it's 
possible I don't.

I have seen this error

Box titled "Error running transaction"
with commentary
"There was an error running your transaction, for the following reasons:"
----------

when there is a yum conflict that doesn't initially show up with the yum check.

Anyway, we know that on SL 5.0 if you select R-devel, it's going to fail with a 
blank reason.  Did you select R and R-devel?
