Did you have your HOME in NFS/AFS?
Looks like, mc is wait for some network FS. I have something like that
when mc start from NFS on SL45.

Ohhh! should be "umask", bug in TUV distro? but it is not related to mc.
sed -i -e 's|unask 077|umask 077|' /etc/X11/xinit/Xsession
to get rid of "unask: command not found"
