I honestly prefer mailing lists or NNTP as forums each require a different place to go to see if there are updates, or else there's constant getting an e-mail notice, which doesn't actually let you know what was posted so then you have to click through, and log in to post a reply.
Even in the best case, like the Zenoss forums with a mail bridge, there's often buggyness or complexities that aren't needed with a mailing list or NNTP...
