I think this model is part of the second legacy definition of nvidia,
so you will need to stick to the 96xx series.

No, that's a pure X11 thing (AFAIK). Check the log file and you will
find that you only have one resolution to work with, so +/- doesn't
really cycle you through anything. You will need to add further modes
to your xorg.conf, but if they are considered not valid the X driver
will drop them.

But it will mention doing so in the logfile, so if you have configured
some further modes, but have the wrong hsync/vsync frequencies the
logfile will tell you that.
