Thanks, then there must have been another modification to ext3, I removed

the resize_inode and ext_attr with
 debugfs -w /dev/hda1
 debugfs: features ^resize_inode
 debugfs: features ^ext_attr 
 debugfs: quit
but kept getting the message about e2fsck not supporting some (it does no
t
say which) features.
Listing the features with the LiveCD and with the older system gave the s
ame
result.
