This variable is used to tell the dynamic loader to use a glibc with
LinuxThreads. See http://people.redhat.com/drepper/assumekernel.html for
more information.
Since the SL5 kernel does not support LinuxThreads, there's also no such
glibc provided. Hence software that relies on the specifics of
LinuxThreads, and doesn't work with NPTL, can't be used on SL5.

I'm afraid no. In the past we could fix some problems by replacing the
ancient JVMs coming with some commercial applications. But this seems to
affect the (maple) kernel itself. I think not even Maple 8 will work on
SL5.
If you find a way to get old versions of maple going on Sl5, please let me
know...
