VIA VT1705 Audio Codec

Latest kernel update leads to no sound. Booting old kernels gives no sound.
Modprobe includes

dist-alsa.conf:
install snd-pcm /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-pcm && /sbin/modprobe snd-seq

dist-oss.conf is disabled (for good reason.)

The only new thing is openfwwf.conf
options b43 nohwcrypt=1 qos=0

no messages in dmsg or messages about sound, snd, or alsa.

As a result of an earlier kernel update screwing up a known good nouveau
configuration I now have the nVidia drivers installed.

Sound preferences declares no audio.

Have tried reboots and complete shutdown and reboots to no avail.

Any ideas?
