That is quite weird.  I'm not too sure I know how to explain it.  I can 
tell you that the 5x repo has newer versions of all the mysql and php 
packages than 50.  I verified that they are present there.  The 5x repo 
is our 'latest' SL 5 release.

Did you by any chance install packages from external repos?  Perhaps 
they depended on older versions of things and caused the issue.
