Knoppix is your friend - I always carry a Knoppix CD for reviving ailing
systems.
Another good distribution to have is Stresslinux

memtest, hardware probing, lm_sensors (for listed motherboards),
cpuburn, bonnie++
And you can put it on a bootable USB stick.
